Grandma's country is in the Ozark Mountains,
in Mountain View, Arkansas.
This is a community
where folk music is played
on the court square
from early spring to late
fall. Local and
out of town musicians just
gather in small
groups and start playing
music all around
the square. Most folks
just bring their chairs
and spend the evening listening
and visiting. |

Mountain View is a people place and still
has a lot of the old time country atmosphere.
Many people who visit this community like
to come by the Ozark Folk Center. Throughout
the day, there are all kinds of craft demonstrations,
from black-smithing to weaving; pottery to
soap making; country kitchen cooking; broom
making and basket weaving. If you ever come
this way and would like to learn one of the
old time crafts being demonstrated, you can
sign up for a class or seminar. In the evening
there is an outstanding music program in
the big auditorium. |

Grandma Patches is one of the Lye Soap demonstrators
at the Ozark Folk Center. She taught me homemade
soap making in August of 1996, from being
my love and passion, it is now my full time
profession, and this is our Web Site. Maybe
it will help make the art of soap-making
more meaningful. Hopefully it will give you
an appreciation for the pioneer spirit that
built this great country of ours. We are
the ancestors of a people who had to know
how to do a little of almost everything just
to forge out a living in these rugged mountains.
No one ever locks their car around here,
except in the summer time. If you don't,
all of your friends and neighbors will fill
your car full of fruits and zucchini. How
much zucchini can you eat? The folks around
here are friendly and always ready to give
you a helping hand or share a bit of "Mountain
Wisdom" with you.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Grandma's
CountryThangs.com, and learn enough about
soap making to appreciate the pioneer spirit
of old and share it with you children and
grandchildren. |
